Local discoveries
Your first walk from Sharíqua will probably take you down to Jérica. Looking out from any part of the house, the town will attract your attention: the streets and houses embracing the hillside, the unique skyline with the emblematic Mudejar style bell tower.

After a 15 minute walk from Sharíqua through orchards and vegetable gardens you will discover a rural town with many centuries of history.

This is the Jérica of the Romans who laid the bases of the town. The Jérica -or more correctly Shariqua- of the Arabs who left their mark in the town’s heritage, the planning of streets and the planting of orchards and vegetable gardens.
And above all the well conserved Medieval Jérica with its three walled areas, its impressive Mudejar tower, its turrets and gateways and its narrow streets and alleys. Sites that were the scene of outlandish historical episodes such as the love affair between King Jaime I and Teresa Gil de Vidaurre or the reconquest of Jérica by this same King.
Those that need a respite from so much history will find it in the river that flows around the town through the ravine known as the “Vuelta de la Hoz”. A lovely walk along the river bank through beautiful scenery with benches where you can rest or watch the intrepid rock-climbers.
If day time Jérica has surprised you, don’t miss the town at night. At least if you are a romantic at heart…
